The Elaboration process

The sustainability of our planet is on the verge of wasteful consumption and overuse of many natural resources. In many parts of the world, a plastic bottle is a package that ends up in a bad way. However, it is necessary and very difficult to replace. The reason for ending up in nature is not in the bottle, or its material, but in us humans. We don’t take care of bottles for recycling and consume natural resources reasonably.

In Finland, tap water is almost always drinkable and drinking bottles are often unnecessary. In a world saturated with goods and rubbish, recycled materials save natural resources in many ways. Recycled products are generally energy efficient in their production method. Recycled material and recycled product mean that the original material has been recycled correctly and the recycled raw material has ended up in the right place.

The blanket for domestic bags is made from recycled plastic bottles (PET plastic) collected in China. China does not accept foreign plastic waste. Bottles do not end up in the sea and landfills if they are collected back for industrial use. The blanket is manufactured in China in a factory that is controlled in production and the blanket has been tested for ingredients and gases harmful to consumers and production staff. The felt of the domestic bags has been tested for the absence of formaldehyde, phthalates, heavy metals, or azo dyes according to the tests of the European REACH chemicals regulation. Production involves workers who receive a wage that is socially sustainable in the community in which they live. On the basis of working conditions, such as those set by the International Labor Organization (ILO), only sustainable co-operation, agreement, commitment and control can succeed.

The chemical name of PET plastic is polyethylene terephthalate, i.e. it is the so-called thermoplastic polyester. There are a large number of different applications for this thermoplastic in the industry. It is also approved as a food container, such as beverage bottles.

It is often difficult to verify that a PET felt is 100% recycled material, i.e. recycled bottles. Chemical testing of PET felt may not be able to reliably verify whether it is new plastic granules or completely made from recycled plastic granules. Recycling Demand for PET felt and fabrics is strong, although large quantities of material are available. PET granules are cheap when recycled and especially compared to new ones. Cleaning methods, i.e. ethylene oxide treatment or gamma irradiation, increase the cost of recycled plastic and potentially increase the environmental impact.

An on-site study of the use of recycled material in the manufacturing chain is an essential part of finding out to consumers the proportion of recycled material in felt. Greenwashing refers to marketing where false environmental promises are made about a product.

We ourselves have wanted to verify how our products are handled at different stages and how we work with them.
