Nordic Labour Journal highlighted Vilikkala as a circular economy pioneer
We are delighted and proud that the Nordic Labour Journal published an article titled "From Uniforms in Berlin to Felt Bags in a Finnish Village – The Green Transition in Action," which examines Vilikkala's operations as an example of successful circular economy and green transition. The article describes how a company from a small Finnish village has succeeded in creating internationally interesting solutions for utilizing discarded textiles and manufacturing new products.
From Uniforms in Berlin to Felt Bags in a Finnish Village
Nordic Labour Journal highlights Vilikkala as an example of how circular economy innovation, textile recycling and future skills development can create sustainable growth in rural Finland.
The article highlights Vilikkala's work in processing recycled textiles into durable felt products and how local manufacturing, innovative product development, and responsible material use can create new job opportunities, even in rural areas. From growing bags and storage solutions to various types of bags, our operations are based on the idea that the circular economy can be both practical and economically viable.
Particular attention in the article is given to the collaboration where discarded uniforms from Berlin's public transport organization are given a new life via Finland. The textile resource was used to produce office bags for the organization's own use. Discarded textiles are processed into felt and new products such as bags and other utility items. The project concretely demonstrates how the lifespan of materials can be extended while simultaneously reducing waste and the consumption of natural resources.
Part of NVL's Future Skills project
The article was produced as part of the Future Skills: Bridging the Competence Gap project, implemented within the framework of NVL (Nordic Network for Lifelong Learning). The network aims to promote competence development, lifelong learning, and knowledge exchange between the Nordic countries and help societies respond to changes in working life.
The project specifically examines how the green transition and digitalization are changing the labor market and what new skills will be needed in the future. Vilikkala was chosen as a practical example of a company that has developed entirely new expertise in the rapidly growing textile recycling and circular economy sector.
Our experience shows that new solutions often arise from cooperation between companies, educational institutions, and regional networks. At the same time, this creates expertise that may not yet be taught in traditional educational programs but will be increasingly needed in future working life.
Thank you for the recognition
We would like to thank the Nordic Labour Journal, NVL, and all our partners for the opportunity to share our story with an international audience. We hope that our example encourages other organizations to consider the possibilities of the circular economy, responsible material use, and the significance of local production as part of a sustainable future.
