Press release about the SOL Services and Vilikkala textile waste pilot
Finland's largest closed-loop textile pilot
SOL and Vilikkala implemented Finland's largest waste textile pilot, where 3,500 kilograms of discarded work clothes and laundry bags were transformed into 20,000 felt products, such as seat pads. The project was implemented entirely domestically in cooperation with Rester, Kolmituote and Ykkösmuovi.
Over the years, SOL had accumulated, among other things, work clothes and laundry bags that could no longer be used. These textiles became Rester's Thanks to the fiber opening process and Vilikkala felting, the felt produced was about the size of a football field.
Vilikkala made the felt products in collaboration with With Salon Kolmituote and Ykkösmuovi comfortable seat pads. Ykkösmuovi's special expertise is heat treatment and cutting of the material. Salon Kolmituote sewed the logo onto the finished product.
Thanks to this completely domestic work, we were able to transform discarded textiles into responsibly produced personnel and corporate gifts. It was important for us to prevent the disposal of discarded textiles and to utilize the huge amount of material that would otherwise have ended up incinerated. Thanks to good networking, we received a completely domestically produced, sustainable gift , says Jussi Holopainen, CEO of SOL Palvelut.
SOL's waste textiles were opened into fibers at Rester, the largest textile recycling facility in the Nordic countries in Paimio. In the fiber opening process, buttons, snaps and other hard parts of the clothes are automatically removed and the textiles are opened into fibers without the use of chemicals. Since the waste textiles were sorted by color, it was also possible to produce the recycled fibers and the felt sheets made from them in SOL's colors.
We have been looking for an open-minded company to implement a fully advanced textile project with us for some time, where the recycled raw material is returned to the company for use. We are happy that the sunny SOL took up this and now we really have much more to offer in promoting the circular economy. The sunny way of going and doing things immediately caught our attention , Jari Toivonen The Vilikkalasta is grateful.
